GOOD NEWS EXTRA - Conversations from the Open Meeting on Wednesday 7th August

Our chair of residents Pauline opened the meeting by thanking everyone for attending and introduced Christian and Heather, two of the talented creative artists behind Fleetwood’s BIG HEART PROJECT.

They updated us on the progress so far … funding had been secured for the first mural and a site had been identified; a series of workshops had begun with contributions from local residents of all ages with some great ideas for themes emerging; planning would continue ahead of work starting later in the year.

The Big Heart Project will bring colour, passion and civic pride to the Town, engage with as many people as possible, support tourism and help to raise awareness of issues affecting the community inspiring current and future generations.

Mark mentioned that he’d seen a terrific feature on BBC Northwest News about Fleetwood Beach Wheelchairs, Reece added it had been recorded some weeks ago. The feature is no longer available online but can be seen on the Fleetwood Beach Wheelchairs Facebook page, scroll down to a post on the 8th August.

Mark also hinted there was some Good News coming soon about recognition for local healthcare.

Behind Closed Doors is hosting a couple of events in the weeks ahead. There’s a Community Clothes Shop at Fleetwood Methodist Church on Saturday 24th August – fill a bag for £5.

Mandy and the team of volunteers are inviting agencies working in the community to a seminar raising awareness of the signs, trauma and impact of emotional abuse and coercive control. The event will aim to find ways to prevent and protect victims from the cycle of domestic abuse.

Fran is already organising the Friendlier Fleetwood Christmas Party and the group is looking forward to their next holiday trip.

Shaz said that the Wyre Wednesday group continues to be very popular and is providing support to several recently bereaved local residents.

She also wants to hear news from community groups that can be shared on Fylde Coast Radio.

Wyre Council has launched this year’s Active Wyre Awards, recognising individuals, voluntary groups and organisations who support residents across the borough to lead healthier and happier lives.

Lots going on with the Alcohol Free Women group ... they now have 15 core-members, all making connections and enjoying the benefits in a change of lifestyle. Julie said they will be joining a Lancashire Women's Walk on 15th September, have been loving the sessions with the Singleton Cloggers and are also working on an event at Grand Hotel, Blackpool next month.

Julie also thanked Reece for his Roving Report on the Healthier Fleetwood website and also said how much she enjoyed attending the recent Fleetwood Moves festival ...

Helen from LPM Dance told us the event had been a great day with people travelling from far away to be part of the music, dance and performances. She thanked Wyre Council and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund for their support and is hoping to repeat the event. LPM will share a video soon. Next is ‘Spectacles by the Sea’, interactive dance shows in care homes and ‘Doodlebugs’ for younger children. The Fleetwood Fusion groups will also resume in September and discussions are ongoing about a new group for people with neurological conditions.

Pauline thanked Emmanuel Church for hosting our meetings and their work in the community. John from Emmanuel invited everyone to view the newly renovated Sanctuary.

Dean is a volunteer with CSI (Challenge through Sport Initiative) which encourages people to try new activities, building resilience and self-confidence to improve physical and mental wellbeing. He wanted to work with local partners to promote the existing activities and look at new opportunities.

Mark has joined Healthier Fleetwood and brings a wealth of experience on governance, policies and bid writing for community organisations. He is available to chat about the ‘next steps’ on Thursday afternoons at the Healthier Fleetwood Information Centre. The day and time for the drop-ins will change and Mark can also be contacted at listening@healthierfleetwood.co.uk

Brian reminded us of the Linda Eaton Arts Awards – entries welcome from all ages, in a number of categories. Copies of the entry form are available from the Healthier Fleetwood Information Centre.

David encouraged anyone who’d not visited the Information Centre yet to call in and bring a friend!

Reece mentioned the Living Seas Wildlife Trail launch and although he was disappointed at not being able to access everything but did recommend people find out more. He and Sunny were invited by Fran to attend Friendlier Fleetwood.

The first part of the meeting closed for tea and more chat.

The next Healthier Fleetwood Open Meeting is on Wednesday 4th September, from 6.30pm at Emmanuel Church, Mount Road, Fleetwood - all welcome!
