GOOD NEWS - August 4th

A slightly shorter bulletin this week but look out for a GOOD NEWS 'EXTRA' over the weekend with a round-up of our Open Meeting, held yesterday evening.

This Saturday morning at 9am, the Fleetwood Promenade parkrun celebrates its fourth anniversary and to mark the occasion organisers are inviting new runners and volunteers to attend, and also support Fleetwood's foodbank, The Pantry.

Fleetwood's parkrun is part of a national network of timed 5k events across nearly 800 locations and this course is on the flat pathway from Marine Hall, out and a little past the Rossall Observation Tower, and then back to the start, offering beautiful views of the beach and across Morecambe Bay.

Sue Ashton is one of the race directors, she says, “The parkrun is for everyone, local resident or visitor, whether they are a serious athlete or the fun-runner who wants to improve their fitness and enjoys the sense of community. It’s also for all ages as we have children taking part alongside their parents and one of our regulars, Mike (left), is 90 years young! Many participants use the parkrun to support their health and wellbeing, stepping up from couch-to-5K or as rehab from injury and illness - even at a steady walking pace the course takes under an hour to complete - and just being involved really boosts your self-confidence.”

The parkrun events couldn’t happen without volunteers, on the day and collating the results for the national database. Around 15 are needed every week to cover the marshaling points and the start/finish area, involving less than 2 hours commitment.

It’s hugely rewarding as Ian Cameron says, “I volunteer because it makes me feel like I'm making a useful contribution to the community. I enjoy the camaraderie between volunteers, making new friends and the positive feedback and the appreciation from runners.”

To find out more about getting involved in the Fleetwood parkrun pop along on Saturday or visit the website here.

Also at this Saturday's parkrun event, runners, volunteers, friends and family are encouraged to bring along a donation for The Pantry.

Tinned and packaged food, men's and women's toiletries, pet food, even usable carrier bags are appreciated and they will be passed on to the amazing team at The Pantry, based at the Fleetwood Hospital on North Albert Street. Thank you.

One of the driving forces behind The Pantry and so much good work in the community is Fr. John Hall of St Peter's and St David's Churches in Fleetwood.

John will be leaving his role later this year and we take this opportunity to thank him for all his time, dedication and compassion for those in need. There's still lots to be done and on Saturday the churches hold their Summer Fayre, 10am to 1pm with a selection of stalls, a prize raffle and refreshments. Please support this event if you can.

Something we don't think Fr John has ever done is abseil down the side of his church (maybe he has?) ... this week one of the members of the Harmony & Health singers took on a challenge that saw her descend Liverpool Catherdral.

Kath Wilsdon is a regular at H&H and raised £1,500 in aid of the North West Air Ambulance Service for completing the abseil. Congratulations to Kath and we understand that the unstoppable Harmony & Health are planning more daring feats in the future ... watch this space!
