GOOD NEWS - 5th October

Thank you to everyone who hosted and supported one of the many local Macmillan Cancer Support coffee mornings last week.

On what was our last day of opening the Information Centre at Affinity Lancashire, generous visitors raised the amazing total of £589. There was a similar amount collected at Mount View Practice and with more donations from events at Emmanuel Church, Fleetwood Surgery, Katie's and The Coffee Box at Affinity, Fleetwood Town Community Trust ... it's around £2,000 going towards the fantastic work of Macmillan from Fleetwood folks! And if you'd like to follow all the news from the local Macmillan Cancer Support teams please see their NEW Facebook page here.

Thank you also for the kind comments since we announced last week we are leaving Affinity Lancashire ... we're just about packed away now, ready for the next chapter in the Healthier Fleetwood story.

To start with we'll be extending our Wednesday drop-in at Fleetwood Library and be there from 10am to 2pm sharing information on groups and activities in the community. We can also offer help to get new projects started. Checking through the archives it's almost exactly 6 years since local resident Mick Gray got in touch and called into the library for a chat with us. We were able to connect him with partner organisations and support the launch of his amazing idea ... for Fleetwood Beach Wheelchairs.

Also on Wednesdays at the library is one of the venue's self-led craft and chat groups from 10am to midday. Although this activity was originally hosted by Healthier Fleetwood it's a great example of local residents taking control as they now keep the lively and popular sessions going, welcoming new members. If you have your own knitting, crochet, crystal art or sketching projects and would like some company while you work, just pop along and take a seat - there's also a few materials and creative ideas to get any newcomers started.

The importance of enjoying arts & crafts, as well as singing, dancing and more will be celebrated at our Creative Voice event in Marine Hall on Sunday 15th October.

From 1pm to 2pm you can meet individuals and community groups to find out more about their creative passions and the benefits to health and wellbeing ... then from 2pm to 4pm there's a variety show with performances by talented and inspirational local residents with a story to tell ... and you can get involved too!

It's all FREE and in the fabulous Ballroom at Marine Hall. We'll share a full preview of the event in next week's bulletin. Follow all the latest news about the Creative Voice event on Facebook here.

The Multiply courses at the Fleetwood Learning Centre, in the old hospital building have been a great success and there's an opportunity to join the team.

Multiply is an adult-learning course for everyday maths and budgeting skills in the welcoming, local setting of The Hub on North Albert Street. Blackpool & Fylde College are recruiting for a role to support students through the initial advice and guidance interviews, and with project paperwork. There would also be an opportunity to be trained in tuition by taking some small maths groups.

Several Fleetwood-based organisations, traders and voluntary groups are celebrating nominations for the Wyre Business Awards 2023.These include the aforementioned Fleetwood Beach Wheelchairs, Wyre and Fylde Community Defibrillators Fundraising Group, Glazey Days Studios, The Wok Box (Fleetwood Market), Fleetwood Town Community Trust and Affinity Lancashire. (Apologies if we've missed anyone). Good luck to everyone at the Awards Ceremony in November - see all the nominations on the Wyre Council website.

If you are looking to meet and work with like-minded businesses and entrepreneurs, this month's Bee Anytime Networking Event is at the Coffee Box, Affinity, 9am to 11am tomorrow (Friday 6th October). There's no need to book, just turn up for coffee and connections ... follow Bee Anytime on Facebook.

A reminder or some more community events coming up this weekend ...Father & Son karaoke kings - Wal and Dion, Harmony & Health and others present a concert for The Willow Garden Project at St Nicholas Church, Broadway, Fleetwood on Saturday 7th October from 7pm. Proceeds will also help the work of the church in the community. Tickets are £5pp on the door or contact Joanne on 01253 878008.

On Sunday 8th October, the Behind Closed Doors team invites you to join an Awareness Walk for Domestic Violence Month, starting at 6pm from the Sea Cadets base, along the Esplanade to The Mount. See the Behind Closed Doors Funding Page on Facebook for more information about the group's work.

And we'll be at Fleetwood Library's Fun Palaces event on Saturday 7th. Pop in from 10am to 4pm for FREE arts & crafts, music, learning opportunities and more, and say please hello at the Healthier Fleetwood table during the morning session.

A little way off yet but great to hear that Fleetwood Fireworks Extravaganza will be staged this year.

Fleetwood Town Council are hosting the event on 5th November from 5pm to 8pm in Marine Hall Gardens. Keep up to date with all the plans for the event on the Council 's Facebook page here and thank you also to Fleetwood Rotary who organised the event for many years.

Finally, thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to a very enjoyable Healthier Fleetwood Open Meeting on Wednesday evening - a summary of the meeting will be shared over the weekend.

We look forward to seeing you all soon ... take care.

Healthier Fleetwood is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the physical and mental health of the Town's residents by connecting them to each other, services and voluntary groups in the community. As an individual's confidence grows they take more control of their own wellbeing and an active role in the decisions that affect them. We are independent of but work in close partnership with the many organisations supporting the community.
