GOOD NEWS - 4th December
Last week a small group of student GPs from Lancaster University enjoyed a very productive and interesting day in Fleetwood.
It's part of a new initiative, being piloted here in Fleetwood, to integrate residents and community leaders into the student's training and their thinking, ahead of qualifying and working at a surgery.
The group started with a visit to Strive Fleetwood for the wellbeing activity with Coach and Shine Community Interest Company and Crafty Alliecat. Calling through Healthier Fleetwood they chatted with Lesley from Wyre Council, Anne & John from The Walnut Tree and several local residents. The students had expressed an interest in specific areas of health and social care, so they also visited the Fleetwood Youth Hub and CGL (drug & alcohol support) before dropping in for a cuppa with Dr Spencer at The Mount View Practice.
It was great to chat with the students and hear their thoughts and ideas. We hope they found their visit inspiring and look forward to meeting more of their colleagues in the future.
Ahead of the schools breaking up for Christmas, bookings for the Winter Holiday Activities and Food clubs with Wyre Council are now open.
Funded by the Department for Education, holiday club places in Wyre are available free to children and young people who receive benefits-related free school meals in the summer, Easter and Christmas holidays. There are also paid-for places available for families that are not eligible to attend for free.
If your child is eligible to take part, you should have received a text or email with your code and instructions about how to book. The booking system has changed and the advice is to give yourself some extra time to familiarise with the new system. If you do not receive your code, please contact your school.
And a reminder that FREE swimming is available for all children living in FY7.
Supported by Fleetwood Town Council, places are available for children aged up to 17 years at the YMCA Fleetwood pool during all school holidays. This is a fantastic opportunity for local youngsters to become more confident and safe in the water, and have loads of fun. The take-up of the offer is low and more places need to be booked to ensure the scheme continues in the future.
Good luck to all the nominated finalists at the first-ever Wyre Community Awards.
An independent judging panel of Greg Mitten & Rachel Coupe (Lancashire Association of Councils for Voluntary Service) and Matthew Foley and Millie Cash from Hodgson Academy have met to deliberate and choose the winners. The announcements are due later today and we look forward to sharing our congratulations in next week's bulletin.
Congratulations to Fleetwood Civic Society and its members ...
... as they recently celebrated 50 years since formation with a social evening and a special screening of End to End: A documentary about the Fleetwood to Knott End Ferry. Thank you to the Society for the many projects and events sharing Fleetwood's history and heritage, including the Blue Plaque Trail of 10 local landmarks and buildings - funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, supported by Wyre Council.
After another busy season, Fleetwood Museum has closed now for the Winter months but their wonderful Bookshop is still open!
The friendly volunteers look forward to welcoming visitors in the weeks ahead, opening hours will be:
From the 3rd December open Tuesdays and Thursdays 11am - 2pm for two weeks.
After the Christmas break they will reopen Tuesday 7th January 2025, then every Tuesday and Thursday 11am - 2pm up until the Museum re-opening, Tuesday 1st April 2025 when normal service resumes.
We love sharing all the GOOD NEWS coming from the Fleetwood Youth Hub
The latest edition of their own monthly newsletter is out now including events, activities and features on some of the fabulous young people involved.
Many of you will know Helen Boone, manager at Fleetwood Library.
Helen left her role last week to take up a new position and we'd like to take the opportunity to send best wishes and thank her for all her support. The venue hosts many groups and events for local residents and is a welcoming, inclusive community hub.
If you've not had a chance to catch the "Walking, Chatting and Mapping" exhibition at The Fleetwood Market Gallery, it's been extended until 14th December.
This exhibition showcases the unique visual responses of artists who participated in the recent series of workshops, led by creative Ann Carragher and hosted by the Market House Studios. The pieces reflect a personal journey for each artist, capturing the essence of place and the emotional imprints they leave.

A reminder it's National Grief Awareness Week until Sunday 8th December and Fleetwood is at the centre of initiatives to create Compassionate Communities.
This is about understanding the power of listening when somebody is grieving, or caring for someone as they approach end-of-life. A 'Bereavement Cafe' event was held earlier today in Fleetwood with staff from Blackpool Teaching Hospitals Swan End of Life Service, Macmillan Cancer Support and Trinity Hospice sharing information and advice. Further events and opportunities to take the bespoke bereavement and grief training will be shared in the New Year.
We hope you can attend this evening's Healthier Fleetwood Open Meeting from 6.30pm at Emmanuel Church, Mount Road.
If you can, we also invite you to bring a few items of food as a donation to The Pantry foodbank or a gift item that can be given as a present to a guest at this year's Fleetwood Christmas Dinner event. Anything you can donate is greatly appreciated.
It's the last meeting of the year and traditionally we don't have a January event so the first one of 2025 is Wednesday 5th February, same place and time. Our thanks to everyone at Emmanuel Church for their continued support and all they do for the local community.
Please keep sending in all your GOOD NEWS news to share with the community.
Until the next time, take care.
