GOOD NEWS - 30th October

With the weather on the turn from Autumn to Winter, the Fleetwood community is stepping up to look after each other in the colder, darker days ahead.

Staff and volunteers from the Fleetwood & Wyre Youth Hub at the Town's former hospital building on North Albert Street have been collecting warm clothing, blankets and hats to pass on within the community. The response has been amazing and they are now welcoming individuals to approach them for any items they need, and taking more donations.

If you, a family member or somebody you support as a carer or professionally need some clothing The Hub is usually open Wednesday to Friday, 9am to 5pm or contact the team on 07485 326775.

GOOD NEWS FLASH ...

Fleetwood & Wyre Youth Hub is looking for a volunteer to support them with many projects running from space. This can be as many or as few hours as you'd like.

There's now more information available on the local venues opening their doors over the Winter months as Warm Spaces.

Fleetwood Library on North Albert Street will have a hot drinks station available from Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm, and a little later on Thursdays to 7pm.

Westview Community Association on Eden Avenue is a Warm Space three times a week ... Mondays 11am - 2pm, Tuesdays 9am - 5pm & also Thursdays from 1pm - 3pm.

There's a hot meal with the Mustard Seed group at St Peter's Church, Lord Street on Mondays from 6pm and the Friendly Lunch Club at The Men's Shed, Manor Road on Thursdays, 12 noon to around 2pm ... all welcome to both.

As well as a brew, there's healthcare, housing and other support available at the drop-in with Fylde Coast Medical Services and their partners - this is on Thursdays during November from 10am - 2pm at Healthier Fleetwood, Lord Street.

A number of other venues also hold coffee mornings and friendship groups, and welcome new members to attend although there may be a fee or donation towards the costs.

The printed list of Warm Spaces venues is being finalised this week, copies will be distributed to community partners in the next week.

We mentioned in the Summer a project to celebrate the Fleetwood to Knott End Ferry service and there's a screening of the completed film next month.

'End to End' will be shown at Fleetwood Library on Monday 11th November, 2pm.

The documentary has been created by Anton Arenko and he says, "Our film charts the Ferry's incredible history as well as the people connected to it through the past and the crew that run it today. We wanted to document this piece of living history before it was too late. We have been very grateful for the knowledge and support of the local community both in Knott End and Fleetwood."

Admission to the screening is FREE, supported by the Friends of Fleetwood Library.

Fantastic fundraising work by everyone connected to Fleetwood Folk Festival ...

... as they presented a cheque for £1,300 to RNLI Fleetwood last week.

The four-day event in September was organised by Fleetwood Folk Club, loyal supporters of the local RNLI service for many years. There's a voluntary collection held among the audience of the weekly gatherings, every Thursday evenings in The Strawberry Gardens, Poulton Road.

There's another chance to enjoy live entertainment with the start of the new Strawberry Gardens Acoustic Sessions.

Formerly known as Folk In The Afternoon and held monthly, the new events will now be weekly from Monday 11th November. On from 1pm to 4pm you can listen to singers, musicians and poets or perhaps get up and perform yourself. There is an admission of £1pp to the session.

Once again this year, Fleetwood Town Council has done an amazing job decorating the Town Centre with huge poppies ahead of Remembrance Day.

The wonderful display lines both sides of Lord Street from the Clocktower at Albert Square down to Fisherman's Walk, and along to Memorial Park - the route for the parade on Sunday 10th November. Meeting point is The Old Comrades Club, Adelaide Street for no later than 9.50am, to set off for a further rally point on Warrenhurst Road for 10.30am. Hymns and the traditional playing of The Last Post will take place by The Cenotaph ahead of the respectful silence at 11am.

In support of the Armed Forces Community, we will be theming one of the windows at our Information Centre to share groups and activities available to veterans, serving personnel and their families.

If you are passing, please take a few minutes to browse the posters for the Walk & Talk, football, gardening group, Zoom coffee morning, Choir and more.

The Blue Light & Bimble Group is for the Armed Forces and Emergency Services personnel, meeting for friendship and support each week - Thursday mornings at Wetherspoons, London Road, Fleetwood ... new members are welcome.

WHAT'S ON AT THE HEALTHIER FLEETWOOD CENTRE

Appropriately, we have a drop-in with Tony, Armed Forces Wellbeing Officer for Fleetwood Town Community Trust, on Tuesday 5th November. He is with us from 10am to around 11.30am for a brew and a chat about what's happening locally, how you can get involved, and also advice on the support and resources available.

And our thanks to a very talented local resident, Janet, for creating dozens of handmade poppies. These are available from the Information Centre for a minimum donation of 50p, all proceeds will be passed on to the Royal British Legion appeal fund.

Also on Tuesday morning, 5th November, until 12 noon, Jenny from Blackpool & Fylde College is back to share details on the many adult learning courses. Some of these will be delivered in Fleetwood or support is available to travel to the Bispham campus.

If you can't make it along this time, email Jenny.North@blackpool.ac.uk for more info.

Last week we were delighted to welcome the winners and runners-up from this year's Grow The Tallest Sunflower Challenge with Fleetwood Wellbeing Way.

This year's winner was Charlie Chesher who after third place last year put his success down to lucky painted stones around the base of his sunflower, giving it lots of water and saying a little prayer.

Runners-up were brothers Frazer and Spencer Barlow and two-time winner Carol Harris had to settle for third this time.

Thank you to Debby from Fleetwood Wellbeing Way for all her hard work and to Jayne from Fleetwood in Bloom for connecting with the local schools and presenting the awards.

UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS

A reminder of the Afternoon Tea Party fundraiser ... in The Green Hut at St Wulstan's Church, Poulton Road on Saturday 2nd November. This is to support the FREE Fleetwood Christmas Dinner 2024, also being held at St Wulstan's, thanks to volunteers and donations from the Community.

> Get involved with both events on Facebook here or call Heather on 07958 558135.

The North Euston Hotel is holding their Christmas Bazaar, from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 3rd November.

It's FREE admission to the event with a variety of stalls to start your Christmas shopping or pick up a treat for yourself. Santa is making an early start this year, visit his grotto. There's also music in the Victoria Bar from 4pm with Stacey Grant.

And finally, it is less than a week until the Fleetwood Fireworks Spectacular!

Held in the gardens of Marine Hall, it's going to be everything you need to enjoy the 5th November. From 6pm there's going to be loads of live entertainment before the spectacular display lights up the sky until 9pm ... and it's FREE thanks to more support from Fleetwood Town Council. Food stalls will also be on-site to make it a great night out for all the family.

We hope everyone has fun with their Halloween and Fireworks celebrations ... stay safe and do take a moment to think of others who may be a little anxious at this time of year.

Keep sending in all your GOOD NEWS to share with the community.

Until the next time, take care.
