GOOD NEWS - 28th August

We start this bulletin with Good News about plans to celebrate our Town's historic and much-loved buildings. After many months of hard work, Fleetwood's Blue Plaque project is being launched soon and the committee of dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers invite you to the unveiling of the first three plaques in a series of ten.

Join them on Thursday 12th September, also the first day of the National Heritage Open Days weekend 2024, to see the plaque at the North Euston Hotel unveiled by the Deputy Major of Wyre, Cllr Steve Nichols. Local historian Dick Gillingham will also speak about the history of the buildings with new plaques ..: Lower Light, Pharos Lighthouse & North Euston Hotel. The unveiling ceremony starts at 2pm.

William Hargreaves, Chair of the Blue Plaque Project Working Group says, "Guests will be able to see this wonderful new marker, saluting the town’s amazing history and then walk to the other two plaques installed nearby. This has been made possible by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, supported by Wyre Council."

The sites were chosen by a Community Panel, from thousands of nominations made by members of the public who love Fleetwood. Further plaques will be unveiled later in September and October in the presence of children from the town’s Primary Schools, several of which took part in the nomination process.

An innovative feature of this project is the erection of blue and white QR Code plates adjacent to the plaques. Each code leads to an online history of the site with photographs, the reasons for the plaque’s erection and details of the next nearest sites, left and right. This means that anyone who scans a code can follow the trail to all ten sites, with or without the Trail Leaflet.

Leaflets will be available from the 12th September at many venues across the Town including the Healthier Fleetwood Information Centre on Lord Street.

We'll include reminders of all the unveiling ceremonies in future bulletins, in the meantime thank you to everyone involved in this fantastic community project, encouraging civic pride and attracting visitors for many years to come.

I’m proud to be part of a project and a community that isn’t afraid to think and work differently. Just to be nominated is fantastic - thank you to all our THRIVE community!"
