GOOD NEWS - 1st December

Once again, the Fleetwood community has come together to support those in need - fundraisers for the Christmas Day Dinner have already passed their initial target! Led by mother, daughter and auntie, Christine, Heather and Gill (and young Isaac too) the kind-hearted group behind this wonderful idea are thrilled with the response so far. The dinner is free and for anyone who might be alone or in need and will be held at St Wulstans and St Edmunds Hall on Christmas Day.

Heather says, "Thank you so much for all the generous donations, we are absolutely blown away by the support we are getting! We are now looking for volunteer drivers on the day to pick up and drop of some of our guests who will struggle to get to us. If you are interested in helping out give me a call or send me a text on 07958 558135." More donations are still greatly appreciated and will really help make the day so special for everyone attending and for those volunteering too.

Community fundraising helps support so many wonderful causes and there's good news for anyone working to reach their targets ... Lancashire County Council has allocated £500,000 per year to the Lancashire Culture & Sport Fund to support community-led ideas for cultural and sporting activities. Organisations could get up to £20,000 to boost projects toward their funding goal.

Parish and Town Councils can take part too, with up to £5,000 available, while individuals with ideas and businesses who want to benefit their community could get £1,500 towards crowdfunding campaigns. With pledges starting at £2, there is also an opportunity for everyone across the county to get involved by supporting projects in their area. The fund launches today and there's two workshops to discuss potential project ideas on 14th December and 12th January 2023.

McGann Boxing & Fitness support local residents of all ages to improve their physical health and also their self-confidence through a range of activities.

After the success of the Summer Camp there's a Christmas Boxing Camp. It's a the YMCA Lofthouse Building on London Street from 19th to 22nd December as part of Wyre Council Holiday Club. Sessions are from 9am to 3pm and will include boxing & other sports; strength & conditioning; nutritional workshops; Panto by Pendle Productions & lots more. Places are free for children aged between 12-16 who are on free school meals and just £20 per day for those who aren’t.

Choose Health have been commissioned by Lancashire County Council, to deliver FREE NHS Health Checks in Lancashire with a focus on workplaces, places of worship and the community.

Even if you are feeling well and healthy, it is worth having your NHS Health Check. The check-up sessions look for signs that you’re at increased risk of: heart disease; stroke; type 2 diabetes; kidney disease and also dementia. Identifying these potential risks early means you can work with health professionals to reduce your risk of developing health problems in the future. These FREE NHS Health Checks are for anyone aged 40 to 70 who has not had a check-up in the last 5 years. They will take about 20 to 30 minutes - you will be asked some simple questions about your family history, and some lifestyle choices; your height, weight, age, sex, and ethnicity will be recorded. Your blood pressure and cholesterol will also be checked. Workplace and community groups are invited to book a visit from the Choose Health team.

A reminder of the Warm Spaces network - the local venues opening their doors to residents during the Winter months for a hot drink, snack, activities and company. You'll see the banners and posters around Town now and the list of all the supporting venues together with the facilities they are offering is being regularly updated on the Healthier Fleetwood website.

The start of a new month so loads of events to enjoy in and around Fleetwood.

The Great Outdoors listing from Wyre Council and their partners includes walks, beach cleans, conservation days and seasonal activities such as Christmas wreath-making workshops.
