GOOD NEWS - 18th December

After the GOOD NEWS of exciting plans for the Fleetwood Seafront and some of the Town's leisure facilities, this week sees the launch of a new website bringing together a huge range of healthy activities and advice.

Led by Wyre Council and a number of community partners, Wyre Moving More is about getting the community, more active, more often by strengthening the connections between sport, physical activity, health and wellbeing. Several events have taken place in Fleetwood and across the borough in recent months and the website is now the place to find out what's happening!

Whether it is through sport, exercise or physical activity the new site will showcase those doing a great job in local communities, promote events, highlighting and encouraging people to get involved in opportunities such as Walk To School Week, National Fitness Day and much more ... 12 Days of Fitmas is a whole page of ideas for moving more and keeping it fun over the festive season.

A great example of how to improve your physical health and general wellbeing through exercise is the Fleetwood Promenade parkrun.

In addition to the events every Saturday morning, there's an extra parkrun coming up on New Year's Day. If you're looking for a positive way to begin 2025, it's 9am start from Marine Hall, out past Rossall Tower and back for 5k ... new runners, walkers and volunteers are very welcome!

This week we received an incredible donation of 50 parcels of warm clothing and gifts to pass on to homeless members of the community.

Our thanks to the fantastic Youth Group at Emmanuel Mount Church, for their kindness in putting these together. Since the Summer, we have worked with Fylde Coast Medical Services, Wyre Council and CGL Inspire to host a 'homeless hub'. It's been somewhere to share help on housing, physical/mental health and sometimes just a brew and a friendly chat. The parcels will be offered to individuals at the homeless hub this week.

It's a busy time at the local schools with so many festive activities and events to fit into the last days of the term, here's just a couple we spotted ...

The Larkholme Primary School Choir entertained residents at Fleetwood Hall care home this week. With a mix of traditional carols and more recent Christmas hits, all sung with wonderful energy and joy, the children brought a smile to everyone's faces.

Around 70 school-children took part in the Santa Dash around Memorial Park. After a run through the park, the event finished at Highbury Stadium. Students from Cardinal Allen and Fleetwood Town Community Trust, and staff from Wyre Council helped as marshals.

We take this opportunity to thank all the teaching staff, the administrators, caretakers, dinnerladies (old-school), and cleaners for educating and supporting the children and young people. We hope you enjoy a well-earned break over the holidays.

Wyre Council has released its festive interactive digital trail in Fleetwood once again so that families can play along and help Nic Clause find his way this Christmas.

The trail follows the story of Nic Clause who is enjoying his stay in Fleetwood. He has arrived for a peaceful holiday with his brother before the busiest time of the year, until something happens that puts all his hard work at risk. Now he needs your help to save Christmas before it’s too late.

> Players can download the app for free here and enjoy following it around Fleetwood’s attractions and historic sights using the markers provided.

UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS

It's just a week until 25th December and also this year's FREE Fleetwood Community Christmas Dinner! This will be the fourth event hosted by a small group of caring, local residents who believe nobody should be lonely or alone at Christmas. Heather, her family and friends have been planning and fundraising for some time and are looking forward to welcoming everyone on the big day, in their words creating "the sort of Christmas you see in the movies.”

In 2023 over 100 people shared the warmth of a Christmas Day meal and the good company. This year as well as the delicious food, fun & games, there will also be a videographer, capturing what being part of the day means to guests and volunteers. Thank you to Heather and everyone involved in this amazing event ... the true spirit of Christmas and of Community.

More community events to enjoy and support in the next few days, including ...

Children & Young People are invited to two FREE Wyre Winter Fest events. Thank you also to Jules and the members of her group for the donations towards 25 Christmas Hampers distributed this week to local residents coping with a cancer diagnosis in their family. Working with Macmillan Cancer Support, it's a lovely, thoughtful gift.
