GOOD NEWS - 15th January

Thank you to Wyre Council and Active Lancashire for the invitation last week to learn more about the Wyre Moving More strategy.

Already lots of great work happening locally in schools, through sports clubs and associations, gyms and personal trainers, and partnerships with local authorities and healthcare providers. There's a range of opportunities for residents to become more active and see the benefits to their health and wellbeing ... it could be taking up a new sport, leaving the car at home to walk more often or dancing around the kitchen ... it all helps!

At the Fleetwood-focussed workshop there was a healthy discussion about ideas for the future, many suggesting ways to encourage younger residents to take up exercise but also a need to support parents/grandparents to act as role models, setting a good example. Much, much more to come and we look forward to sharing all the Good News.

Family Hubs are supporting children, young people and parents across Lancashire and locally much of the great work is based at Fleetwood Library. Groups include Infant Massage, Play and Read sessions, an Afterschool Club for Dads, Babbling Babies (supporting speech, language and communication in early years) and times to just meet with others and chat over a brew.

Coffee and Connect One Stop Shop, 1.30pm to 4pm on the 4th February and every first Tuesday of the month is about sharing a range of practical support, with refreshments and toys to entertain the children. There's no need to book, just turn up on the day.

> For more information visit the Wyre Family Hub page on Facebook and also the Lancashire Family Hubs Network website

We mentioned at the end of last year that Fleetwood Gym Boxing Club were moving into fantastic new premises, well they are all settled in and recently had a VIP visitor!

Fleetwood's very own, Jane Couch MBE popped in to meet the boxers and the coaches, and show them her replica World Title belts. The new facilities are already a big hit with well over 60 attending the sessions, aged from just 5 to 9 years, plus teenagers and seniors ... boxing for men and women. And the Club is honoured to have hosted the North West Youth Championship Quarter Finals last weekend and the Semi Finals this weekend. This is the very best 17 & 18 year-olds in the region battling out to become North West Champion ... two Fleetwood Gym members have made their finals and another is challenging for a place on Saturday!

The search is on to find the County’s most deserving youngsters for the Lancashire Young Citizen of the Year Awards but the nomination deadline is approaching!

If you know someone, aged 19 or under, who has done something selfless for another person, organisation, or their local community, the Lancashire Partnership Against Crime and The High Sheriff of Lancashire want to hear from you. The winner will receive £300 along with a special trophy and certificate from the High Sheriff & Lancashire Constabulary’s Chief Constable Sacha Hatchett. The two runners-up will also receive £100 and their own certificates. Applications can be submitted up until 24th January 2025.

This week we had the pleasure of calling in to meet some of the residents at the Lighthouse View extra care development in Fleetwood.

During a very pleasant morning, we were able to pass on information on what's happening across Fleetwood and how they might get involved. We'll be popping back again soon!

Regular visitors to Lighthouse View are Kelly and Natasha from Coach & Shine. Supported by Lancashire County Council, they host a weekly activity session that's included positivity boards, creative writing, mental agility challenges/puzzles and sharing 'words of wisdom'. The latter has led to a lovely exchange of messages between the residents and the Girls Group at Fleetwood Youth Hub.

Hopefully, we've seen the back of the extremely cold weather for a while but it is Winter and that means contacting the appropriate healthcare services and taking care of ourselves.

NHS staff experienced the busiest year on record for A&E and ambulance services last year, and flu continues to pile pressure on hospitals into 2025.

The suggestions from the NHS to help prevent spreading infections are common sense ... washing your hands with warm water and soap; cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze; throw away used tissues as quickly as possible.

When professional healthcare advice and treatment is needed, it's important to know where to find information you can trust.

Lancashire Health Hub is an online resource offering a range of advice on who to contact, self-care and the problems caused by sharing 'fake news'.

There's a drop-in event Wednesday 22nd January at Fleetwood Library from 10am - noon. Staff will be available to tell you more about accessing the help available.

A reminder of the Fleetwood Warm Spaces ... venues across the Town open for a free hot drink, perhaps a snack or activities.

NEW to the list is Strive Community Cafe, offering tea or Americano coffee at selected times during the week.

Healthier Fleetwood is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the physical and mental health of the Town's residents by connecting them to each other, services and voluntary groups in the community. As an individual's confidence grows they take more control of their own wellbeing and an active role in the decisions that affect them. We are independent of but work in close partnership with the many organisations supporting the community.
